Know your legal obligations

Probably the MOST important factor when looking for training is whether or not your training is required by law. A parent simply wanting to pick up some useful tips can book onto any course they think sounds interesting.

BUT! As an Early Years childcare provider, you have a legal obligation to ensure that staff have the correct training and qualifications. This means your setting must:

  • Have at least one Paediatric First Aid trained member of staff on site at any time and on any outing
  • Ensure ALL childcare apprentices complete Paediatric First Aid to qualify
  • Ensure all newly qualified staff who have completed a Level 2 or Level 3 early years qualification on or after June 2016 have a full Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric First Aid certificate within 3 months of starting work, to be allowed to be counted into ratio
  • Childminders in sole charge of children should hold a full Paediatric First Aid certificate

Best practice means ALL keyworkers should have this training at a minimum, but ideally ALL staff should.

Ofsted Compliancy

As well as meeting your legal obligations, it’s important that your training is Ofsted compliant. This means any course you attend needs:

  • A 12-hour course – including six hours practical
  • To include CPR and defibrillator practice
  • To be delivered by qualified trainer
  • To be repeated every three years
  • Online only courses are NOT compliant with Ofsted. Why? Because if you complete your training online you won’t be able to complete the six hours of practical training, including live CPR and defibrillator practice.

Understanding different course costs

With courses being advertised from as little as £25 it may seem tempting to go for the cheaper option.

However, it’s likely that the less expensive training won’t meet the requirements necessary for childcare providers.

Things to consider when looking at varying prices:

  • Costs vary per head and are cheaper if you book a full course of 12 people at one time (legal maximum)
  • Prices may vary dependant on whether the training is at a centre or your own setting
